  8. │ This record is a means of conveying information about a software   │
  9. │ product from the author to distributors and users.  It contains a  │
  10. │ normal, "human-readable" section (you're reading it now), followed │
  11. │ by a compressed data record.  The data record contains a great     │
  12. │ deal of information in a form useable by automated tools.  This    │
  13. │ allows BBSes, disk vendors, etc. to test automatically for         │

  15. │ information for use in BBS files databases, vendor catalogs, etc.  │

  119. To install the VendView viewer, simply unzip or copy all files into a
  120. single directory on your hard drive.
  121.  
  122. For convenience, you may wish to place the directory on your DOS PATH,
  123. probably via a PATH statement in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file. (Consult your
  124. DOS manual if you're unfamiliar with this operation. If you're using
  125. MS-DOS v5.0 or later, you can use the command "help path" to learn
  126. more.)

  128. Many users keep their DOS PATH and directory structure simple, by
  129. placing small utility programs in a single directory rather than
  130. allocating a separate directory for each utility. If you wish to do
  131. this, you can place these files:

  133.    VENDVIEW.EXE (the program itself)
  134.    VENDVIEW.HLP (the program's help file)
  135.    CATEGORY.INF (a list of product categories used by VendView)
  136.  
  137. into a directory that is already on your DOS PATH.  It is inadvisable to
  138. use the \DOS directory for this purpose, but you may find it convenient
  139. to keep such programs in a directory that you create, such as C:\TOOLS.
  140. These three files must be installed in the same directory, for proper
  141. operation of VendView.

  143. The remaining files can be retained or eliminated, as you prefer. (You
  144. may wish to leave all files in the same directory until you've become
  145. familiar with VendView.)

  148. QUICK START
  149.  
  150. To invoke VendView on a VENDINFO file, make sure the file is in the
  151. current working directory, and execute the command
  152.

  155. If you have not placed VENDVIEW.EXE in a directory that's on your
  156. DOS path, You'll need to use the full pathname of that file, such as:
  157.  
  158.    c:\vendview\vendview.exe
  159.  
  160. If you're executing VendView from a read-only medium, such as a
  161. CD-ROM drive, you'll have to use the -d (directory) command-line
  162. flag, to assign a writeable directory in which VendView can create
  163. its VENDVIEW.CFG configuration file.  You might also need to do
  164. this if you're using a version of MS-DOS earlier than 3.0.
  165. An example might be:

  167.    d:\files\vendview\vendview.exe -dc:\myconfig

  169. In most cases, a software package will contain only one VENDINFO file,
  170. it will have the standard filename VENDINFO.DIZ, and VendView will load
  171. it automatically. If the current directory contains multiple VENDINFO
  172. files, you can either load the preferred file after starting VendView,
  173. or you can specify it by adding the filename to the command line, as
  174.  
  175.    vendview INCXT11.DIZ
  176.  
  177. For a really quick start, just invoke VendView in the directory in which
  178. you've installed it.  You'll have access to the help system, which tells
  179. you everything you need to know to make use of VendView, and you'll be
  180. able to practice by viewing the VENDINFO.DIZ file that comes with
  181. VendView itself.

  183. The context-sensitive help system should provide you all the additional
  184. information you require.  Just press F1 or Alt-H for help.  Pressing F1
  185. twice, from anywhere, will display the help system index.

  187. It is suggested that you use the help information extensively at first,
  188. and specifically that you read the first three items in the index. These
  189. provide a quick introduction to the VENDINFO system in general, and to
  190. the use of VendView in particular.
